Honora, Peace! Well the image is of a Tau cross, a Greek/Hebrew form of the cross mentioned also in the Book of Ezekiel (mark them with the tau). It was mentioned by Pope Innnocent III at the Fourth Lateran Council and adopted by St. Francis. What's underneath it, no one is quite sure. One explanation I've heard is that it's the skull of Adam, reflecting the tradition that Christ was crucified over Adam's grave, but I'm not sure about this. The words me: The Lord bless you, Br. Leo. The story is that St. Francis drew this for Br. Leo to help him through a hard time he was having. God bless you!
Peace, and thank you! I knew what the Tau was.. I actually got as far as attending some SFO fraternity meetings, but between the violence of heart that was present that last afternoon, and my not being immersed in prayer, I decided to privately live Franciscanly for now.. but the things at the foot of the Cross are intriguing..seemed like bread, potato, seashell.. :-) And the words are wonderful to know.
As for a photo of Francis with the beggar-leper, I have seen something like that online, but darned if I can recall where.. I'll send you a link if I find it again.
